Men's Tennis Concludes Fall Season

Junior Francisco Pereira
The men's tennis team went 18-14 in singles and 10-7 in doubles this past weekend at the University of New Mexico Lobo Balloon Fiesta Classic.

In the first round on Friday, Yoeri Van Speybroeck, Devin Stroman (Silver City, NM/Silver High School), and Camila Almieda all made it through with wins over their opponents. Van Speybroeck was the lone Mustang to get out of the round of 16 with a win. He defeated Alex Beaussart, 7-5, 4-6, 6-1. Stroman and Almieda shifted over to the consolation brackets.

The remainder of the Mustangs found success in those consolation brackets. Henning Thrien (Gelsenkirchen, Germany/Carl Friedrick Gaus Gymnasium), Francisco Pereira (Linda A. Velha, Portugal/Escola Secundaria de Miraflores), and Kyle Lynch (Albuquerque, NM/New Mexico Military Institute High School) advanced to the quarterfinals after dropping their first match of the tournament.

By the end of the tournament, Stroman and Pereira had to defeat their own teammates, Almeida and Francisco Damasio (Jundiai, Brazil/Centro Educational Sigma ), in the finals of the south and southwest bracket to take home the finals victory.

In doubles action, Lynch and partner VanSpeybroeck went all the way to the west finals, but were defeated in the end by Stakne and Tommasi.

"Time after time the Mustangs continue to overcome adversity,” says head coach Erik Burton. “The men continue to battle for every point with some wins and some tough defeats. We are building for a very strong spring 2010, and I can't be any happier with the great effort. The men's fall season is done, and they will continue the march towards the RMAC Championships.”
