Banuelos Captures ITA Singles Championship

Junior Yair Banuelos
Newcomer Yair Banuelos (Mexico City, Mexico, Universidal del Valle de Mexico, Riverside Community College) came close to sweeping both the singles and doubles ITA Central Region titles Sunday in Kearney, Nebraska, but Metro State Scott Bradley and Georgie Perez got in the way. Banuelos settled for runner-ups in the doubles competition. Banuelos, however, did capture the singles championship, defeating Perez in the finals (6-3, 6-1). Banuelos will go to the national championships to face the champions from the other seven regions late in October.

Metro's Bradley and Perez, the top seed at the tournament, breezed through the doubles bracket and then faced against No. 2 seed Banuelos and Kyle Lynch (Albuquerque, NM, New Mexico Military Institute High School). Bradley and Perez won, 8-2.

Lynch also had great singles success over the weekend but he was defeated by Perez in the semifinal round, 6-2, 6-2.

More information on the national ITA Championships dates and location will be posted en the next few days.
