With tough competition on the courts at the Southwest Collegiate Invitational in Albuquerque this weekend, the WNMU women's tennis team came up short in every matchup. Assistant coach Carolina Hannes still saw many good things. “Overall the tournament was a good experience and gave us the chance to see how well we are competing. It definitely gave the team more confidence on our game because we faced strong D1 schools,” says Hannes. “After this weekend, the women are very excited for the season and looking forward to working hard and improving even more.”
On Friday, freshman
Sarah Nogan (Albuquerque, NM, Cibola High School) almost clinched a win against her University of Texas – El Paso opponent but fell in end, 6-3 and 6-4. Nogan then forced three sets on Saturday versus her University of New Mexico competitor Oldani. She took the second set with ease but dropped the first and third (7-5, 3-6, 6-3).
Stephanie Shelton (Douglas, AZ, Douglas High School) showed some heart on Sunday when she took on the University of Oregon's Besovic. She challenged Besovic but came up short, 6-4 and 6-3.
