Despite temperatures in the mid-90s, Western New Mexico couldn't maintain its blistering pace Sunday as they shot a disappointing 360 and turned in a fourth place finish in the RMAC Women's Golf Championship. Fort Hays got off to a good start and gobbled up WNMU's seven shot first round lead early in the round and cruised to the RMAC title after finishing second to Central Region foe Upper Iowa who scorched the Sundance Golf Course with an impressive 312 for a 39-shot victory.
Since the event was the RMAC Championship, all central regional teams were invited, but the tournament was to determine the final RMAC honors of the season.
Montana State Billings was third with rounds of 345 and 339 to edge WNMU by one shot out of third place.
The Mustangs were led by sophomore
Carissa Schwalm (Las Cruces, NM, Mayfield High School) who finished tied for seventh in the event, earning all RMAC honors. Other Mustangs scores included T19th-
Amanda Bjork (Kennewick, WA, Southridge High School, Columbia Basin College), 78-95, and
Kayla Gonzales (Roswell, NM, Goddard High School) 83-90; T24-
Britanny DeMent (Silver City, NM, Silver High School) 83-91; and 63rd-
Danica Tarkington (Chamberino, NM, Gadsden High School) 119-116.
The tournament will most likely end WNMU's 2009 season.
