Head Women's Basketball Coach Greg Adams
Head women’s basketball coach Greg Adams announced his first pack of recruits since joining the Mustang staff in June. He will have three guards and one post player join the team for the 2009-2010 season.
From Scottsdale, Arizona, Lonnie Sanchez comes to WNMU from two very successful programs. At 5-5, the shooting guard was a member of two 5A state championship teams (2004, 2006) at St. Mary’s High School. She then went on to play at Central Arizona College where she led her team to a National Junior College Athletic Association Division I National Championships this past season. The Vaqueras, who ended the season a perfect 35-0, won the 2006 national championship but finished second each of the past two seasons.
Sanchez rounded out the perfect season averaging 8.7 points and 2.6 rebounds per game. She also shot 41.8 percent from the floor. “Lonnie’s shooting ability is a dimension that we absolutely had to have,” says Adams. “She is a solid student, and being a part of a national championship and two state championship teams, she’ll bring a winner’s expectation to our program.”
Lauren Wells, 5-7, hails from Agoura, California and transfers to WNMU after two seasons with Santa Barbara City College. She averaged 13.7 points, four rebounds, and three steals per game. While in high school at Agoura High, Wells was named the team MVP in 2005, 2006, and 2007. She also earned all-conference honors in 2006 and 2007.
“I’ve witnessed Lauren’s progression as a player over the years. She loves the game of basketball and enjoys competition. Her skill set will fit in well here,” states Adams. “We have a strong group of hard workers, and I know she will be another.”
Also at 5-7, Kassie Scott (El Paso, TX) will stay close to home the next few years. Scott attended Coronado High School in El Paso prior to attending Howard College for one year. While a Thunderbird at Coronado, she earned many basketball honors and awards, which included 1-5A First Team All-District and 1-5A First Team All-City each four years straight. She averaged 18 points and seven rebounds her senior year. She also posted 66 total steals in her final year of high school.
“Kassie loves to practice and compete,” comments Adams. “She is known for her ability to shoot and stretch defenses, and that is what I’m looking for her to do. I’m excited to have her as a part of our program.”
Shelby Saucedo also comes to WNMU from El Paso. At 6-0, she graduated this past spring from Americas High School where she average ten points per game and helped lead her team to a 31-8 record last year. For the last three seasons, the Trailblazers have advanced to the area and bi-district playoffs.
“Shelby gives us size and depth inside,” states Adams. “She’s strong and not afraid to get physical. She will develop into a solid contributor over the next four years.”
The four newcomers join nine other returners on the Mustang roster.
