The Mustangs will bring the Warrior's Helmet, a coveted WNMU/Highlands trophy tradition that started in 2008, back to Silver City for another year. WNMU defeated New Mexico Highlands University, 38-13, as they closed out their road season Saturday afternoon.

WNMU was up 17-10 at the half after two Kevin Breaker (Stockton, CA, Lincoln High School, Delta College) runs into the end zone and one Kameron Drawhorn (San Diego, CA, Fallbrook High School) 42-yard field goal, but it was 10 more points than the Mustang defensive coaches had hoped were on the Cowboys' side of the board.

In the second half, WNMU broke the game wide open with a surge from special teams punt returner Salvador Garcia (Anthony, TX, Anthony High School). The purple and gold defense held the Cowboys offense to just 14 yards on their opening drive to force them to punt. Garcia called for the ball and got it on his own 22-yard line. The sophomore returned it 78 yards and his first special teams touchdown of the year.

Highlands tacked on one field goal midway through the third quarter, but that was it. Breaker, on the other hand, tacked on his third touchdown of the day. Donald Askew (Mesa, AZ, Agua Fria High School, Scottsdale Community College) then capped off the Mustang scoring with three big carries at the end of the game that resulted in a 12-yard touchdown.

Breaker finished the victory with another 100-plus yards performance with 111 yards on 22 carries. Three quarterbacks saw time with Chris Voller (Albuquerque, NM, Valley High School) leading the way with 136 yards of offense. Brendon Tunstall (Chandler, AZ, Corona Del Sol High School) recorded two receptions for 86 yards.

Drawhorn produced some of his best numbers of the season in the punting category. He averaged 45.2 yards per punt. Garcia returned five punts for 127 yards for the one touchdown and three kickoffs for 63 yards.

Defensively, Ryan Nolan (Tempe, AZ, Corona Del Sol High School) led the Mustangs with six tackles. Terron Sumpter, Jr. (Fallbrook, CA, Fallbrook High School) and Terence Brannic (Oceanside, CA, El Camino High School) both recorded an interception.

WNMU will take on CSU-Pueblo next weekend at home in the final game of the season. Kickoff is set for 12:00 noon.
