Women Get First Win of Season

Senior Stephanie Shelton
The Mustangs showed great effort in order to beat the Dixie State Red Storm Friday. With a 5-4 win, the women's tennis team clinched their first win of the season.

WNMU started off great in doubles. Stephanie Shelton (Douglas High School) and Emily Lampman (Kerrville, TX, Tivy High School) gave no chances to their opponent, winning their match 8-1. At the No. 1 spot, Doris Berberic (Lower Hult, New Zealand, Hutt Valley High School) and Nikolina Vukadin (Pale, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Sredwjoskolski Centar Pale) also notched a point with their 8-5 victory.

“With a great intensity, the ladies kept up their game into the singles matches, earning three other matches,” says assistant coach Carolina Hannes.

Vukadin, at the No. 1, spot fought through her first set as she was down, 5-3. She quickly turned the match around, wining in two straight sets, 7-5 and 6-1.

“Stephanie played a great tennis today showing great ability and hitting great shots,” continues Hannes. Shelton nixed Adrienne Davis, 6-3 and 6-3.

The final point in the 5-4 victory came from Lampman. She downed her opponent, 6-4 and 6-1.

“This win was really important for us because it gave us confidence and proved that we have a strong team. All of them were very motivated and played their hearts out. As a coach, that's all I can ask for. Today they definitely made me proud by showing great effort, and as long as we keep playing like we did today, we are going to have a great season,” concludes Hannes.
