Mustangs Lose In Close One

Junior Henning Thrien
Western New Mexico and UC San Diego were evenly matched in Wednesday's contest, but the Tritons squeaked by the Mustangs, 6-3.

WNMU picked up an 8-4 win at the No. 1 doubles spot with Yair Banuelos (Mexico City, Mexico, Universidal del Valle de Mexico, Riverside Community College) and Henning Thrien (Gelsenkirchen, Germany, Carl Friedrick Gaus Gymnasium, Hope International University). At No. 2 Flavio Rueda (Mazatlan, Mexico, Universidad Autonoma de Durango, Riverside Community College) and Kyle Lynch (Albuquerque, NM, New Mexico Military Institute High School) were up 5-2 and slowly let juniors Erik Elliot and Jake Fellow get back into the match. With the score at 7-4, Rueda and Lynch were serving for the match yet could not escape. Elliot and Fellow got the narrow victory with the 9-7 win.

In singles, Banuelos and Thrien had another great performance. Banuelos handled his opponent, 6-2 and 6-3; Thrien took care of Fellow, 6-3 and 6-3.

“We were playing much tougher in singles with wins at No. 1 and 2 spots, a three-setter at No. 3, and a close one at No. 4 singles,” says head coach Erik Burton. “We are continuing to play these highly ranked teams, and they always seem to be on their home courts. In the long run, I know that will pay off.”
