The WNMU women's tennis team fell short against Grand Canyon Thursday afternoon, losing 5-4.
WNMU won the doubles at the No. 2 spot win an 8-6 victory by
Stephanie Shelton (Douglas, AZ, Douglas High School) and
Emily Lampman (Kerrville, TX, Tivy High School). However, the No. 1 and No. 3 doubles weren't able to come through and ended up losing 8-3 and 8-6 respectively.
Going into singles, losing 2-1 in the overall confront, the team was able to compete, winning three out of the six singles. The first to get the job done was Lampman with a great win (6-0, 6-1) at No. 3.
Sarah Nogan (Albuquerque, NM, Cibola High School) won in the last slot (6-4, 6-1), and
Nikolina Vukadin (Pale, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Sredwjoskolski Centar Pale) at No. 2 dropped the first set 6-0 and was winning in the second set 1-0 when her opponent retired.
The final and decisive match was at No. 4 where
Doris Berberic (Lower Hutt, New Zealand, Hutt Valley High School) showed great effort but wasn't able to get the win in the end. After losing her first set 6-0, she came back and won the second set 6-4. After being ahead during the whole third set, she fell short and lost 7-5.
“Even though we didn't get the win, it was a good day for the team,” says assistant coach Carolina Hannes. “The conditions weren't easy as it was extremely windy. For the most part, we were able to play with it. It was also good for the team to understand how important doubles are because we had great chances to win two out of the three doubles, and if that had happened, we would have won the match.“
