Head volleyball coach
Jim Callender announced his final two recruits for the 2010 roster.
Didi Gentzler (Waianae, HI/Pearl City High School) will step in as a libero.
Angela Sooalo (Honolulu, HI/McKinley High School) is a setter and opposite hitter with a tremendous vertical jump. Both are from Hawaii.
Gentzler hails from Waianae and attended Pearl City High School. As a senior, she earned honorable mention status. She went on to play for the Hilina'i Volleyball Club in the off season. In 2008, Gentzler knew what it was like to have her high school team in the spotlight. Pearl City finished third in the OIA Red Division – West.
“Didi's an extremely hard worker and an excellent defender,” says Callender. “She plays in the tough OIA High School Volleyball League on the island of Oahu. She is well prepared to play at a high level in college. She has a wonderful attitude and a true love for the game. We'll use Didi to play all defensive positions for us and rely on her ball control, which really impressed me watching her in club ball.”
Sooalo attended McKinley High School in Honolulu for four years and played for Daryl Tamashiro on the Oahu Volleyball Club this past season. As team captain at McKinley in 2009, Sooalo received All-State Honorable Mention recognition and was awarded the Governor's Award for Offensive Player of the Samoa Bowl Tournament. She also helped lead her team to a six place finish at the OIA State Division I championships.
As a junior, Sooalo earned All-State Second Team honors because of her strong statistics. She posted a school record of 15 aces in once set. On the season, she averaged 4 aces per set. Her team finished fifth in the OIA playoffs. This was a near mirror reflection of Sooalo's sophomore year.
“We were looking for a setter/hitter player and think we have found a great one in Angela. She has tremendous power as a hitter and is very strong as a setter,” comments Callender. “She competes in the tough OIA High School League in Hawaii as well. Angela has been one of the top players in the league for three years. Angela will give us the opportunity to play a two-setter offense and gives us depth in a 5-1 offense. She'll learn our offense quickly and will be a great asset to our university and volleyball program.”
