COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- Western New Mexico University sophomore women's tennis player
Ashley Newell (Las Vegas, NV/Silverado) was named the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Week as announced by the conference office Wednesday.
Newell won her first two matches on the weekend against McMurry, as she dominated at No. 2 singles with a 6-1, 6-2 victory. In doubles at the top flight with
Ganna Tiurina (Kiev, Ukraine/M.M. Gromov #227), they rolled to an 8-4 decision. Against the No. 3 ranked team in the country in Abilene Christian the following day, Newell had one of the best results playing against the No. 9 player in the region, she lost, 6-3, 6-1. At doubles with Tiurina, the fell to the top doubles pair in the region, 8-1. For the season, she is 5-3 in singles, with all of her matches coming at No. 2, while in doubles with Tiurina they are 4-4.
The Lady Mustangs will be in action this week when they travel to San Diego to play four matches.
