COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Western New Mexico University tennis players
Rodrigo Almeida (Arapongas, Brazil/Nene Lourenco High School) and
Ganna Tiurina (Kiev, Ukraine/M.M. Gromov #227) were named the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Players of the Week as announced by the conference office Wednesday.
Tiurina kept the streak of all Lady Mustangs to win the Player of the Week honors, as she opened the first week winning the honor, which
Ashley Newell (Las Vegas, NV/Silverado) followed and now Tiurina has collected the award for the second time.
She opened the week with a victory over Grossmont CC and then had a big win over No. 32 UC-San Diego in singles action coming away with a 1-6, 6-2, 10-8 win at the top flight.
Almeida made it two out of the three weeks that a WNMU player has won the award with
Francisco Damasio (Jundiai, Brazil/Centro Educational Sigma ) winning it to start the season. Almeida pulled off an upset in the match against Azusa Pacific, as he defeated the No. 6 player in the nation in three sets, 6-7, 6-4, 10-4 at the top flight. He ended up going 3-1 on the week in singles play pulling off a three-set win over Point Loma at the top flight, 6-1, 0-6, 7-5. He also won his match against Grossmont in straight sets. In doubles against Point Loma, he teamed with
Juan Pablo Fuentes (Guadalajara, Mexico/) to win at No. 1, 9-7.
