Tiurina Named Player of the Year as All-RMAC Awards Announced

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Ganna Tiruina led several Western New Mexico University women's tennis players on the All-Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Teams as she was named the Player of the Year as announced by the conference office Wednesday.


Tiurina followed up her Preseason Player of the Year honor by being selected as the Player of the Year. The sophomore from Kiev, Ukraine, leads the team in singles victories with 15, with all of her matches coming at the top flight. She also has 12 doubles wins with teammate Ashley Newell (Las Vegas, NV/Silverado). She has been named Player of the Week twice. She defeated Division I Idaho State, Cameron, UC San Diego, Academy of Art and went a perfect 5-0 in RMAC regular season play in singles. In doubles, they are currently on a seven-match win streak defeating Idaho State, Seattle and going 5-0 in RMAC regular season action.


Ashley Newell (Las Vegas, NV/Silverado) landed on the First-Team and was also part of the Preseason All-Conference squad. The sophomore from Las Vegas, Nev., has come through with 11 singles wins at No. 2 and 12 doubles wins at No. 1 with Tiurina. She has won five straight matches with all of them coming in RMAC regular season play. In doubles, they are on a seven match win streak and went a perfect 5-0 in conference regular season play. Newell and Tiurina were also named to the First-Team as a doubles squad.


On the Second-Team, Claudia Osuna (Mazatlan, Sinaloa, Mexico/Tec Milenio ) and Marie Monier (Saint Etienne, France/St Paul Forez Montbrison) grabbed accolades for the Lady Mustangs. Osuna, a freshman from Mazatlan, Sinaloa, Mexico, played all but one of her matches at No. 3, going 10-14 overall and 10-13 at No. 3. She had big wins over Point Loma and went 4-1 in conference play. In doubles play, she teamed with Monier to win three matches in conference action. Monier, a junior from Saint Etienne, France, posted an 8-6 singles mark playing all but one match at No. 4 where she went 8-5. She went 4-0 in conference play and also had a big victory over Idaho State.


On the Third-Team was Davida Aragon (Arenas Valley, NM/Cobre High School). Aragon, a senior from Arenas Valley, N.M., went 8-13, going 6-11 at No. 6 and 2-2 at No. 5. She recorded a victory over McMurry and also won three matches in conference play.


Senior Doris Berberic (Lower Hutt, New Zealand/Hutt Valley High School) and freshman Diamond Morrill (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad) landed on the Second-Team doubles. They went 8-15, going 7-8 at No. 2 and 1-7 at No. 3. They won three in conference and also had a solid win over Tarleton State.


WNMU will return to action this weekend when they will open the RMAC Tournament in Grand Junction beginning on Saturday.
