Rain washed out the remaining games at Burkburnett High School in the Holiday Inn at the Falls/MSU Invitational on Sunday but not before the Mustangs went 1-1 on Saturday. The Mustangs held it together in the first three innings against Missouri Southern. A poor inning in the fourth and another in fifth ended the game early, 9-1. The Mustangs rebounded in the second game to earn a 5-4 victory over Northwest Missouri.
In game two, WNMU faced an uphill battle as they saw Northwest Missouri score three runs right away, but WNMU's
Kortney Smith (Maricopa, AZ, Marana High School, Central Arizona Community College) showed her speed on her first shot at the bases. After a walk, Smith advanced to second on a wild pitch.
Amy Aicher (Snohomish, WA, Snohomish High School, College of Southern Nevada) then singled to right field to send Smith around the remaining bases for the first run of the day.
The Mustangs got within one in the third when
Kristina Barr (San Diego, CA, La Costa Canyon High School, Central Community College) notched her eighth hit of the season to drive in
Samantha Lopez (Albuquerque, NM, Del Norte High School, Lamar Community College) who reached on her own single.
While keeping the Bearcats scoreless, WNMU's
Brittney Batten (Benson, AZ, Benson High School) helped tied things up with a triple to right field, smashing one of the four Mustangs' hit of the inning. Batten made it safely home because of
Courtney Graf's (El Paso, TX, Coronado High School) single.
Both teams scored in the fifth, but it was the bottom of the sixth inning that gave WNMU their first advantage of the day. With two outs and a new pitcher, Barr tallied her second hit and second RBI of the day, allowing Smith to cross home plate for the second time.
