New Players Shine At High School Championships

Newcomer Patrick Beyhan
WNMU's golf fortunes appear to be in good hands as two future Mustangs finished first and second in their prospective New Mexico State High School Championships. La Cueva's Patrick Beyhan cruised to a five-shot lead in a wind-blown AAAAA Boys Title at UNM's Championship Course. Beyhan's 73 and 74 scores was a birdie-fest as he easily defeated his teammate, UNM-bound Sam Saunders who finished seventh in the event.

Meanwhile in the AAAA girls division played at NMSU's University Golf Course, Arrianna Estrada shot rounds of 87 and 75 to get nosed out by one shot to Deming's Bianca Dominguez. Estrada was a November signee for the Mustangs and is one of the state's top prep golfers.

"I couldn't be more proud of these two players. They both are serious golfers and show that junior golf in New Mexico is on its way back," said WNMU head coach Kent Beatty. "Pat has great fundamentals and has had a great spring in high school. Arri is just getting to show good she can be. New Mexico State is a very difficult golf course, and 75 around there in wind is just a terrific round of golf."

Both of WNMU's current teams are participating in the NCAA Championships this month. The women are playing this week in Mesa, Arizona while the men compete next week in Indianapolis, Indiana.
