Mustangs Fall Behind Early

There are plenty of holes left of the NCAA Division II Women's Golf Championship the par-71, 6,159-yard Longbow Golf Club Wednesday, and the Mustangs are going to need at as they have fallen behind in the 12-team group. WNMU finished day one at 349, 65-over par and in 12th place.

Top-ranked defending national champion Nova Southeastern is leading after the first round. The Sharks shot an opening round 298, 14-over par and have an eight-stroke lead over No. 3 Rollins.

Newberry College's Maria Luz Besco leads the individual competition after an even-par round of 71. She has a one-stroke lead over Augustana's Emily Kvidera and three-stroke margin over a quintet of golfers that include Nova Southeastern's Sandra Changkija and Abbey Gittings; Rollins' Joanne Coe and Elin Marcsdottir and Tarleton State's Katy Ward.

The Mustang five are separated by seven strokes. Freshman Megan Downey (Glendale, AZ, Sandra Day O'Connor High School) is tied for 56th with an 84. Glynnis Price (Shiprock, NM, Shiprock High School, University of New Mexico) took one extra stroke to be bunched with three others for 60th. Faylyn Beyale (Fruitland, NM, Kirtland Central High School) shot an 89 while Carissa Schwalm (Las Cruces, NM, Mayfield High School) and Haley Raymond (Socorro, NM, Socorro High School) round out the group with 91s.

The 72-hole championship continues through Saturday and resumes Thursday with opening tee times set for 7:30 a.m. PDT.
