Men's Golf Holds Off Field to Take RMAC Championships; Metz Grabs First Place

The WNMU men's golf team celebrates the RMAC Championship following the final round Tuesday.

David Metz
said after the win. "They're all exceptional players and you can see in them that they belong. It means that this is the start of an exceptional situation for WNMU golf."

"It means a lot," Metz said in reference to winning the RMAC Championship. "Being able to win the RMAC is important to us and it is good to have this momentum going into regionals."

The No. 1 team in the South Central Region and seventh ranked team in the nation used poised shots and consistent scores throughout the lineup to hold their second round lead on the final day to post a 878 (296-286-296) to win the Championships by seven over the nine-team field. The ThunderWolves came charging during the final round thanks to a pair of individual medalists, but the Mustangs recorded four in the top-12 to counter.

Senior David Metz (Tucson, AZ/Canyon del Oro HS) claimed the top medalist honors carding a 214 (73-67-74) to hold his two-stroke lead on the field and take the top spot. Metz utilized par-4 and par-5 scoring to retain his lead throughout shooting (-1) in the par-4 and (-5) in the par-5. His second round 67 tied for the lowest score of any round in the Championships.

"Dave is the player that every coach wants," Beatty said. "He came in as a baseball player that has taken every opportunity and you see what has happened to him. I couldn't be more proud."

Metz wasn't alone. Sophomore Calum Hill (Kinross, Scotland/Kinross HS) and freshman Harry Wetton (Bedford, England/The Bedford School) found the course to their liking as well tying for sixth with 220's. Hill backed up his second round 70 with a final round 73 to go with his opening 77. Wetton nearly shot the same scores posting a pair of 73's and a 74. Sophomore Thomas Neve (Epsom, England/Cams Hill School/Merrist College) rounded out the group in the top-12 as he tied for 12th with a 224 (73-76-75). Freshman Anthony McGeorge (Holsworth, England/Shebbear HS) carded a 235 (82-76-77) to tie for 33rd.

The titles continue to roll in for the Mustangs this spring as the RMAC Championships becomes the fourth win and is the third straight for WNMU. The stretch started back on Mar. 24-25 at the Cal Baptist Invitational and continued at the Mustang Intercollegiate.

WNMU will have until May 5-7 to prepare for the NCAA Division II South Central/West Super Regional that will take place at the Grey Rock Golf Course in Austin, Tex. Twenty teams will battle it out, with 10 each coming from the West and South Central Regions.
